The ground was known as Hampden Park and was the world's first purpose built, enclosed, international football ground and the Scottish Cup Final was played there in 1874.

The first bicycle race at Hampden Park was on Saturday, September 6th 1879 at the Queen's Park FC annual amateur athletic meeting, at which there were foot races, a four a side football competition and a two miles bicycle handicap race, won by DD Bryson of Midlothian BC.

The annual sports were very popular, with 10,000 spectators at the 1881 meeting, two more bicycle races were added, a one mile West of Scotland confined race and a one mile club race. The meetings earned the reputation of being the leading athletics event in Scotland and drew competitors from England, Scotland and Ireland.

The rent for the ground increased to £100 per year and when, in 1883, the Cathcart District Railway revealed plans to build a new railway line on part of the Queen's Park FC ground, the club moved to Somerville Drive, where they built a new ground and Third Lanark FC took over the old Hampden Park. The ground is now partly covered by railway lines and is also the site of Hampden Bowling Club and Kingsley Gardens.
